A 650B Project

I have had this '99 Trek 930 from for a while now; it's in great structural condition and I've ridden it set-up many different ways. The last of which as a full rigid single speed. This steel beaut' has been hanging in the rafters long enough, because I have decided to build a Bridgestone Xo-1 Tribute bike. Grant Petersen now pushes the 650B format so I've figured I will build this as a 650B rigid, with cantilever brakes and a mustache bar. Yes the BB height will go up just a bit, but I'm OK with that: at least it is no longer collecting dust. I confirmed that the Pacenti Quasi-Moto will fit without a problem, but I think I'll be using the Schwalbe Marathon slicks most of the time. I also have some cheap 650B tires I found that would handle light trail duty as well. Either tire will fit fine along with a set of full fenders. I will be moving the canti mounts to achieve proper brake reach, on both the frame and the cromo rigid fork. I may even add rack mounts to the fork.

I'll update as the project progresses.

A couple things. I have an '89 Rockhopper that I've done 650b on. For trail work, it handled best with a 26" wheel in the back. I recently picked up another 650b wheelset to turn it into a commuter, but I really disliked the 650b in comparison to the 26". Taller, larger wheels made it painfully dull handling on the road, which is funny, because it was a lot of fun on the singletrack. Maybe handling will be better if you go with a shorter fork than what your bike was designed for?

I used FMF powermoto brakes- they have a lot of reach and work well, I think. They might still have some available if you scour ebay.

Good luck.

I have already moved the brake posts. If you were unaware I build frames also, so this procedure was easier than finding-buying-paying for- and shipping a converter brakeset. The 930B is nearly finished (without a repaint). Stay tuned.

I am curious about what fenders you will spec. Have you found 650B specific fenders or are you planning fabricating/reworking a 700c set?

OK I'll give you all my component choices for this project. It is nearing completion, and the frame still needs to be repainted.
I am recycling many of my extra parts to revive this bike.
